Had a really enjoyable time going down to support Sonia for the Stardust XVII Finals held at NUS yesternight. Since I was free the whole day, I went down to NP to accompany Jinghui after she was dismissed which was around 1plus and it was like 5 hours before the performance.
Watched this documentary at the NP lib titled Highway Courtesans required for her project. I felt kinda sad for the girls in the film cus they didn't really have a choice and it was sorta like a "tradition", hence being forced into prostitution. This was their only way of earning money to support their families. The government over there isn't doing anything to prevent it. If only they can get proper education or something. Sigh... I feel bad for almost everything.
Back to Stardust, met up with Karin over at NUS before heading into the theatre. The contestants, Solo & Group, were awesome. Notable mentions in my opinion were Rohasliza(2nd Runner-Up), Joel, Hun and Dwayne(Solo category Winner) whom sang songs by Whitney Houston, Ray Charles, Vanessa Williams respectively. Dunno whose or what song Dwayne sang, but it certainly was entertaining and I like musical-style songs. And of course, not forgetting the ever-wonderful Sonia(1st Runner-Up) giving a splendid rendition of 祝我生日快乐. Must be the magical combi of medicated oil and baby powder.
I thought two of the contestants(can't remember their names) were quite unlucky cus the genre of their chosen songs were similar to Rohasliza's(whom has very powerful vocals) and the whole presentation of their songs were very much the same. So when this kinda situation happens, the one who can deliver a top-notch performance will stand out. Though Hun(a Cambodian & SAJC student with a squeaky voice), sang with this weird accent and hilarious pronounciations, I actually thought she really expressed how the song was meant to be like. I like Joel's performance as well, with a lil' dedication from Sonia. Sweet!
What Momma Wants won the Group category which they really deserved it, since they put in a considerable amount of effort to plan the whole Acappella arrangement. All these are just my own humble overview of the particular segments which appealed to me. Hooray to "Sexy Sonia" once again!
